As always, the days go by in a blur...

Note: I started this post in early October and somehow never published it so here it is.

I don't know why I think that is an acceptable excuse for being a terrible, lazy blogger but there it is.

We've had a busy few weeks since school started but definitely the high point, activity-wise, was volunteering at Freedom's Run. This was a new marathon event (plus a half marathon, 10k, 5k, and kid's one mile run) which started in Harper's Ferry, ran up the towpath on the C&O Canal, through the battlefield at Antietam, and ended in Shepherdstown. They had over 1800 participants in the very first year of the race, which ended up being a West Virginia record, and the kids and I ran the first water station on the race route.

This entailed me trying to wake three very sleepy kids (my two plus Laura's friend Maya) up at 5:00 am, collecting another kid down the street, and driving to Harper's Ferry before dawn. By the time the sun came up we had set up three long tables, pre-poured hundreds of cups of water and sports drink, donned our rain ponchos (when the runners try to grab a water cup out of your hands they frequently miss and water goes everywhere - by the time the last runner had passed we were very happy indeed that we had worn protection), and were ready.

The first runner appeared a little before 7:15, the last one straggled through about an hour later. By 9:00 we were packed up and ready to head home. We're already signed up to do it again next year because a good time was definitely had by all.

By the way, wouldn't you want a nice refreshing cup of water from these goofy little people? Yeah, me too.
